“We want to create a space for them that is just for them and no pressure from peer circles,” Acevedo said.
OCEANSIDE, California – Allan Acevedo remembers going to the prom in 2004.
“I remember going to prom with a boy when I was in high school, feeling a lot of stress and the way they cleared the dance floor because they did not want to be around us. I think it now there is no stigma and people can be authentic, “Acevedo told the North County LGBTQ Resource Center.
And now, San Diego County students in grades 8-12 can express themselves authentically at the Say Gay Prom on Saturday, April 30th.
On Friday, the North County LGBTQ Resource Center prepares for the big night. After two years without dance, they are ecstatic to keep alive the tradition that has lasted for nine years.
“Despite living in a time where LGBT children feel supported, we are still struggling with differences in schools. Trans children are more likely to drop out of school before they finish bullying. Suicide is high. Events like this will normalize diversity and children will enjoy being around other children who are just like them and support parents as well, ”said Max Disposti, executive director and founder of the North County LGBTQ Center.
Everyone who attends will receive goodie bags containing a rainbow flag, incandescent sticker and some stickers.
The non-profit, “The Princess Project” will provide 75 to 100 clothes for students to wear to the prom and even take home.
“The princess project comes with all the clothes and accessories and makeup completely free of charge,” said Bianca Rodriguez, director of the North County LGBTQ Resource Center’s youth project.
There is a safe place and fun night where everyone is involved.
“Every child is welcome. You would be impressed how all non-rainbow children come and come from a different background or culture,” Disposti said.
“A welcoming environment full of love and support,” Rodriguez said.
Acevedo says it’s been a long time coming.
“We want to create a space for them that is just for them and no pressure from peer circles,” Acevedo said.
The Say Gay Prom begins on Saturday, April 30th at 6pm. – 9:30 pm at the El Corazon Senior Center. If you are in the school year 8-12, you can still sign up and participate.
