The issue, according to Westminster student Riley Bredbeck, is gay student rights and recent legislation in Florida and Texas that erodes those rights, she said.
Florida’s legislation is known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, he said. The law prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity for kindergarten through third grade. For mature students, discussion of gay and transgender issues must be “age appropriate or developmentally appropriate.”
Bredbeck said Friday, April 1, was part of a nationwide protest into the erosion of LGBTQ rights.
“People have been extremely supportive,” he said.
The students organized the walk and the protest themselves, Rhomberg said, and said the students would not face discipline for walking out of class for about 90 minutes on Friday morning.
He said the school supports the students for their activism. He said the students had informed the school of their plans ahead of time.
“We confirm freedom of speech,” he said. “We support it and are very proud of the students. We honor their executive. ”
He said he sent a couple of teachers to accompany the students, to make sure there were no problems.
The protest was organized by students from the school’s Social Justice Alliance, said teacher Alexandrin Zuser, the Alliance’s staff adviser.
“The Social Justice Alliance works on issues of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, gossip and other discrimination, both within and outside the walls of our schools,” the students wrote in an email.
“The group started as GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) but has expanded to include other social justice concerns. The projects range from writing letters and student support cards in states where anti-LGBTQ + legislation has been passed to creating a school resource bulletin board to work with faculty and administration to ensure the school is a safe and welcoming place for everyone. , ”They wrote.
As Bredbeck spoke to a reporter, there were honors in support of the students. He said there had also been some negative slurry.
