‘I feel gay’, FIFA president tries to sympathize with the marginalized

AL RAYYAN, Qatar, Nov 19 (Reuters) – FIFA President Gianni Infantino raised eyebrows on Saturday when he tried to show sympathy for marginalized groups by telling reporters at Qatar ‘I feel happy … I feel like a foreign worker’.

Infantino opened the regular World Cup meeting on Saturday with a lengthy speech criticizing Qatar’s hosting of the tournament because of the country’s human rights record. read more

“Today I feel Qatari. Today I feel Arab. Today I feel African. Today I feel happy. Today I feel incomplete. Today I feel (like) a migrant. Today I feel (like) a migrant worker,” he said.

“I feel all these things because of what I see … it brings me back to my personal story.”

Infantino described in detail how he grew up as the son of working-class people from Switzerland and was bullied because of his voice and because of his red and ugly hair.

“Yes, I’m not Qatari, I’m not Arab, I’m not African, I’m not gay, I’m not disabled,” he added later.

“But I still feel it, because I know what it means to be discriminated against, to be oppressed, to be a foreigner in a foreign country.”

LGBT rights have become a touchstone for critics of the tour because same-sex relationships are illegal and punishable by up to three years in prison in Qatar.

“Judging by social media, your comments that make you feel gay have shocked many in the gay community,” one reporter later said before asking Infantino a question.

“Because, they’re saying, if you’re really gay you can’t say that because you’ll be pleading guilty to a crime.”

However, FIFA’s media director, Bryan Swanson, ended the press conference with a personal message of support for his manager.

“I have seen a lot of criticism of Gianni Infantino since I joined FIFA, especially from the LGBTI community,” he said.

“I am sitting here in a special position on an international level as a gay man here in Qatar. He has received assurances that everyone will be welcomed … Only Gianni Infantino is not gay, he is not meaning he doesn’t care. He does care.”
