A crash outside a black-owned gay bar early Sunday morning that killed three men and injured another appears to have been intentional, the Chicago Police Department said at a news conference Monday. Officials say the incident is not currently being investigated as a hate crime.
Police say the crash happened after an argument at Jeffrey’s Pub turned into a physical altercation in the street. At one point, one of the people involved got into his car and rammed it into a group of people standing next to the pub. Officials say they recovered the vehicle that hit the four men outside the bar, but the driver is still being sought.
The department’s chief of detectives, Brendan Deenihan, is asking the public to come forward with information.
“Obviously the car can’t be charged with a crime,” Deenihan said. “We need to know who was in charge, and we know people know.”
According to the police, four male victims were taken to local hospitals, three died from their injuries.
The victims were identified as Donald Huey, 25, Jaylen Ausley, 23, and Devonta Vivetter, 27, according to Cook County Coroner’s Office spokeswoman Brittany Hill. The surviving victim has not been publicly named and remains hospitalized, according to NBC Chicago.
Dashboard footage from NBC Chicago shows several people on the street when a physical altercation broke out. The video also shows the moments just before the car hits the men, but does not show the actual collision.
A woman who witnessed the crash said she saw a car speeding down the street before the “major chaos” began.
“I was standing behind the bar talking to one of the victims,” he said. “I took three steps and a car came and hit him and he flew over the car.”
Jeffrey’s Pub shared a Facebook post about the sad episode, offering condolences to the families of the victims and encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
“We are heartbroken this morning that such a tragic event has occurred,” the post read. “And to those who lost a loved one or a friend, we are with you.”
