Romantic comedy fans who have been craving a new addition to the canon that breaks the heteronormative mold will see their wish come true this month with “Bros,” the first gay romantic comedy to be created by a major studio.
The upcoming film is the brainchild of Billy Eichner, the comic mind behind “Billy on the Street” and “Difficult People.” Eichner stars in and co-writes the Judd Apatow-produced film.
Eichner plays his typical cynical, self-deprecating protagonist, a podcast host named Bobby who’s pretty much given up on finding someone tolerable by now. That’s when he meets the beautiful and seemingly perfect Aaron (Luke Macfarlane).
The film, which is released by Universal Pictures, is also the first major studio film to have an all-LGBTQ main cast, with names like Ts Madison, Monica Raymund, Guillermo Díaz and others. Universal Pictures and NBC News are both owned by Comcast NBCUniversal.
When asked during an interview Tuesday on NBC’s “TODAY” show if he felt responsible for making a film that was LGBTQ first, Eichner acknowledged that “there is a responsibility there,” but he said his goal wasn’t to “sit down to write a landmark film.
“Our goal was just to write a hilarious movie,” he said. “Our goal was to bring people to the theater and give them a really good time and a reason to laugh out loud with their friends.”
Eichner, like his character, is originally from New York, lost his parents when he was young, and is both funny and opinionated. When asked by “TODAY” host Craig Melvin if there was an autobiographical aspect to the film, Eichner said that while his character was “not identical to who I am,” he said. said he “took a lot out of my personal life”.
“Gay comedians like me, we haven’t had a real chance to tell our stories like this on a big, big screen,” he said. “I wanted it to be personal, and it’s about being vulnerable and telling an honest story.”
Both Eichner and Macfarlane said they hoped straight people would watch and enjoy their gay rom-com – just as gay people have long watched and enjoyed straight love stories.
“As a gay man, I watched those movies, and I cried and I laughed, and I got something out of it,” Macfarlane said of straight romantic comedies. “So I’m thinking maybe asking some of our straight friends to watch a gay couple fall in love and cry and laugh and get something out of it too. I think that’s what the movies are all about, it’s not to look for ourselves in the movies, but to see how we relate to someone who is perhaps different from us.
In a new “Billy on the Street” video posted to his Twitter account on Tuesday, Eichner can be seen wandering the streets with, as he put it, “famous and beloved straight guy” Paul Rudd and “a pack of wild lesbians” trying to convince straight passers-by to see “Bros.”
“Bros” opens in US theaters September 30.
