Spectators came from down the street and across the country for Palm Springs‘ 36th annual Greater Palm Springs Pride parade Sunday.
Participants decked out in rainbows and other festive garb apparently represent a variety of groups, from the Palm Springs High School band to the “Pornstar Float” made up of adult performers.
The theme of this year’s festival, “Say Gay,” is a play on the controversial Florida bill signed into law in March that restricts classroom discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity, dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by its opponents.
While some festivalgoers said the theme sent an important political message, others said they were not even aware of it and just came to enjoy the day in a supportive environment.
“Parades in general in places like Palm Springs — we’re pretty much out there,” said Harry Helbing, a Palm Springs resident who attended the city’s second Pride parade. “So ‘saying gay’ is like, ‘Yeah, what?’ Maybe if this was in (red) condition it would be a different story.
Helbing, who moved to Palm Springs from San Francisco during the pandemic and said he has participated in “a lot” of larger cities’ Pride festivals, said Palm Springs pride “has a nice kind of homemade quality.”
For Kate Dunn of Austin, Texas, this year’s Pride was a family affair. She traveled to Palm Springs with her boyfriend and girlfriend’s parents to attend her first Pride festival.
“We thought, ‘Why not do it somewhere that knows how to do it?'” Dunn said. “(There’s) a small town feel but we’re still celebrating Pride with everyone around us.”
Dunn said that, as someone who lives in a conservative state, he felt that the year’s theme resonated and represented something that “definitely” needed to be discussed.
“Kids are going to get through this experience regardless and if we can help them along the way – I know it helps me talk to people, especially people younger than me,” she said. “I think it would be easier if we would pull the cloak from things and just talk about things openly instead of having a puritanical approach to education and discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity”
Noelani Delara, a 22-year-old resident of Coachella, said they have been coming to Palm Springs Pride for many years but were not aware of the theme of “Say Gay” and did not have a specific opinion about it. However, Delara beamed as they talked about how much they enjoyed the show.
“I just feel so excited, so happy just to be here,” Delara said. “I was like, forget Disneyland, this is the happiest place on earth.”
Jim McMichael, watching the parade with a group of friends who came from Hawaii, also did not have a strong view of the event’s political message, but said he could be proud and receive support from his allies this year. has “been divisive” that is important. The resident of Nevada said it was the first time to observe the parade, but he had previously participated in it as a representative of Las Vegas pride.
Jeff Max, who traveled from West Hollywood to attend the weekend party, initially said the “Say Gay” theme seemed a bit silly given how supportive the local neighborhood is for people who identify as gay. When reminded by a friend that the theme referred to an event in Florida, however, the position changed dramatically.
“I took it back,” Max said. “You have to ‘say gay.’ It should be in the books, they should be taught.
Roger Anderson, a friend of Max and a resident of Palm Springs, said the situation reflects the widening gap between the political reality in different regions of America.
“It just boils down to the differences in politics that exist in our world today,” Anderson said.
